Bossard, Vena, and Ted Kosinski also get first of year; Proper continues to dominate Challengers; three this season for Shagla; Carlson gets second of year. Les Myers win Vintage Modified special and Scott wins Legends match race.
Busti, NY (June 18, 2016): Doug Eck got to Victory Lane with a burst of power down the back straight at lap fifteen of the Overhead Door of Jamestown Super Late Model finale for his first feature win at Stateline since 2011. The early laps had featured a three-way fight for the lead between Chad Valone, Dutch Davies, and Jake Finnerty before Eck powered his way to the win. Darrell Bossard parlayed his front row starting spot to his first Shults Auto Group RUSH Crate Late Model feature win of the season, leading the entire distance. Vic Vena prevailed in the Sugar Grove Beverage E-Mod main event, leading from lap four after a row two start and withstanding a strong challenge from Kyle Bedell near the mid-point of the event. It was Vena’s first-ever win at Stateline. 60-year Stateline fan Cathy Donaldson was remembered prior to the start of the E-Mod feature. Justin Carlson became the first repeat winner of the new Rusted Nutz Pro-Mod class. Dave Shagla collected his third win of the season in the Fox’s Pizza Den Street Stocks and Ted Kosinski, a former Himes Auction Super Sportsmen champion, also collected his first victory of the season. Andy Proper continued to be undefeated in the Bailey’s Towing & Recovery Super Challenger night capper, after starting twelfth on the grid and only taking four laps to get to the lead. The Pennsylvania Vintage Modifieds made a visit to the speedway with Les Myers winning the fifteen lap feature. Jim Scott and Lars Huling, two local legends, had a special match race with Scott narrowly eclipsing Huling at the finish to make his first visit to Victory Lane since 1976!
Dave Shagla, winner of two Fox’s Pizza Den Street Stock features this season, started from the pole but jumped the initial start so was penalized two spots. That put heat winner Brad Church on the pole but it was Shagla leading at the end of one lap, when caution was shown for an incident involving Eric Hastings and Scott Delahoy. Another yellow for Guy Adams at three laps again slowed the race. Before another lap could be completed Church spun for the next caution. With cars getting “out of shape” on the back straight another yellow was thrown, even though no one stopped. The next start was negated by the starter. At five laps complete Shagla was leading last week's winner, Bill Reeves, who spun sideways at six complete. Kyle Weilacher then was second but he spun in turn four before the next lap was complete. For the lap six restart Shagla led Tony Marotto, Brian Crandall, Mike Moore, and Reeves back to green but Bill Best spun and was collected by Deven Dudenhoeffer. With the time limit reached, the race was checkered and Shagla went to Victory Lane for the third time this season.
Jeramy Williams and opening night winner Justin Carlson brought the Rusted Nutz Pro-Mod feature to green with Williams narrowly ahead of fourth starting Jason Covey, also a feature winner this season, after one lap. Zach Johnson spun in lap two, slowing the event for the first time. In turn four of lap three Covey used the inside lane to get by Williams for the lead then caution again flew for an incident between Kevin Ruhlman and Johnson in turn four. At the end of four Scott Gurdak, also an early season winner, was up to second. At lap six Brian Mohawk spun in the main straight slowing the race again. The top four at this point were all feature winners, Covey, Carlson, Gurdak, and Kelly Frederes. Williams was back to fifth. Frederes was third at halfway. With five to go Frederes spun into the infield but never lost a spot. Up front Carlson got next to Covey on lap twelve and was leading at the end of that lap. Frederes again spun into the infield, this time losing third to Gurdak. Carlson went on to become the first repeat winner over Covey, Gurdak, Frederes, and Williams.
After a tribute to Cathy Donaldson, a 60 year fan of Stateline Speedway and Mother of E-Mod driver Ron Seeley; Butch Southwell and Vic Vena brought the Sugar Grove Beverage Outlaw E-Mods to green but Vena was deemed to have jumped the start so put back two spots. Troy Carr then led from the outside front row but the race only made one lap before Kurt Thorpe spun in turn two, slowing the race for the first time. Ryan Scott spun on the back straight and was collected by several cars, including Troy Johnson and Steve Rex. Scott needed towed from the scene. Southwell, Kyle Bedell, and Vena led the field back to green but only one more lap was in before John Schenker spun with Johnson getting caught up in the wreck. Vena led the race back to green this time with Bedell challenging after a lap of racing. At five laps the order was Vena, Bedell, Greg Johnson, Seeley, and Southwell. Beddell got the lead at seven complete. Kirk Bradley fourth at halfway just as Troy Carr spun in two. With half the race completed Bedell brought the field back to green with Bradley coming to second then spinning in turn four with eleven completed, also involving third place Johnson, and fifth running Seeley. Beddell and Vena continued to lead Southwell, Thorpe, and Bradley with five laps to go but Vena pulled by Bedell at sixteen complete. Vena then went on to his first-ever Stateline feature win with Beddell holding on for second, Southwell third, Bradley fourth, and Carr fifth.
Jim Kirkwood, known as “Dingo” due to his Australian heritage, led the Vintage Modified feature from green but the race was slowed at lap two for the stalled #20 in turn one. Kirkwood again led after green with Les Myers second until Kirkwood spun in turn three on lap twelve. Myers then went on to the win with Kirkwood coming back to second.
The Shults Auto Group RUSH Crate Late Models had Darrell Bossard and Ryan Scott leading the way to green. Bossard led from the start with Scott second and Damian Bidwell third. By five laps in Bossard had a quarter-lap lead over Scott with Bidwell challenging on the high side when Robert Meacham III spun in turn four, erasing Bossard’s huge advantage. Bidwell was trying for the lead after green but Bossard again began pulling away at seven laps into the event. At halfway the top five were Bossard, Bidwell, Scott, Dave Lyon, and Chad Silleman. Last week’s winner Jason Genco got to fifth at five laps to go but fell back behind Silleman at four laps left then got the spot back at the white flag. On the final lap Bidwell caught Bossard in traffic and made a charge for the win but came up short. Dave Lyon succeeded in getting by Ryan Scott with two laps to go. The top five were Bossard, Bidwell, Lyon, Scott, and Genco.
The Overhead Door of Jamestown Super Late Models started eighteen cars with Ward Schell and last week’s winner Dutch Davies on the front row. Davies a two-time former champion, led the first two laps up to a caution for an incident in turn four with Joe Layfield, Chub Frank, and Rich Gardner. At the end of three laps Jake Finnerty was third. At five laps Matt Urban spun to the berm of the infield and stalled, bringing yellow again over the race. Back to green it was Davies leading Finnerty, Schell, David Scott, and Chad Valone. Valone shot up to second at green using the extreme high line. At lap nine Valone was leading but Steve Kania spun in turn two, again slowing the event with Davies back in front a lap later. Davies continued to lead after green until Valone got by on the back straight of lap twelve and Jake Finnerty coming to second a lap later at halfway. Finnerty and Valone ran the next lap side by side with Doug Eck shooting to the lead at lap fifteen. Bump Hedman then spun in turn four again slowing the race. Eck led at sixteen with Finnerty, Valone, Davies, and David Scott filling out the top five. With five laps left it was Eck, Finnerty, Scott, Davies, and Valone. John Lobb came to fifth at lap 22 then it was all Eck going to his first win since 2011 over Finnerty, Davies, Scott, and Lobb.
Jim Scott and Lars Huling had a special match race using the Vintage Modifieds with Scott driving Alan Byerly’s 47 car and Huling in the X3 of Les Myers. The two ran side by side throughout the event and finished in an apparent “Dead Heat”! After a review Scott was deemed to be the winner, sending the Stateline track owner to Victory Lane since July 24, 1976!
The Himes Auction Super Sportsmen feature was brought to green by Ted Kosinski and Dan Nocero Jr, both former champions of the class. Yellow flew before the end of lap one when Tommy and Matt Kosinski tangled in turn four. Ted Kosinski led from green with Nocero second and Burgun third. At the end of three Burgun was second and a lap later last week’s winner Jim Kibbe was third after starting twelfth. At the halfway point Shane Horner came to a stop on the back straight, slowing the race. At lap twelve Kibbe got by for the lead and appeared to be on his way to the win but Ted Kosinski caught him in lapped traffic on the final circuit coming back by for the win, his first of the season. Burgun was later disqualified and moved to last place for illegal tires.
Kevin Covell led the Challenger series to the line for the final feature of the night with skip Jackson to his outside. Andy Proper, looking to stay perfect on the year, rolled off 12th. Covell held Jackson off for the lead early while Proper moved to third by the end of the second lap. John Dunn’s stalled machine on the front stretch brought out the first yellow but that only delayed Proper's charge. By the end of lap four,Pproper had taken his usual position at the front, cruising to his fifth straight win ahead of Jackson, Lindsey Carlson, Mike Riche Jr, and Covell.
