Wyatt Scott and John Lobb Take Home Mystery Team Money! Max Blair Wins Again and Harvey Captures First RUSH Pro Mod Feature Of Career!
July 9, 2017
BY ALLEN SEYBERT
BUSTI, N.Y. - There was an undeniable feeling of the unknown in the air Saturday during Stateline Speedway's Overhead Door Super Late Model vs. Ed Shults Auto Group RUSH Crate Late Model mystery team event at the one-third mile dirt oval. Each Super Late Model driver was paired with a Crate Late Model driver prior to the feature races and the three teams with the best combined finish in their respective features were awarded extra pay for their performances.
When the dust settled, it was the team of Wyatt Scott and John Lobb splitting a $500 bonus with Scott finishing second in the Crate Late feature and Lobb fourth in the Super Late event. The second-place team, splitting $300 was Dennis Lunger and Bump Hedman and finishing third and splitting $200 were Chad Wright and Darrell Bossard.
While Scott and Lobb took home the extra money, it was Max Blair winning the Overhead Door Super Late Model feature and Lunger winning for the second time in the 2017 Ed Shults Auto Group RUSH Crate Late Model division.
In other action, Gary Eicher drove to his first win in the Sugar Grove Beverage Outlaw E-Mods feature, Matt Harvey ended Lunger's winning streak in the Rusted Nutz RUSH Pro-Mod race and John Boardman made it three straight wins in the Wellington Log Homes Street Stock event. Tommy Kosinski was the winner in the Super Sportsmen class and Pete Volpe finished the night with a win in the Bailey's Towing and Recovery Super Challengers feature.
After winning the two most recent Overhead Door Super Late Model features, Max Blair was forced to start 12th in this week's race as Darrell Bossard and Damien Bidwell brought the field to the green flag. Bossard led early and Bump Hedman was also a factor early, challenging Bidwell for second while Blair lurked in fourth. Blair's #111 didn't stay at the back end of the top five for long.
After a caution for David Scott's cut tire, Blair rocketed past Hedman and Bidwell on the ensuing restart and began nipping away at Bossard's rear bumper. Blair eased ahead at the line to lead for the first time at the completion of lap five, but the pair battled side-by-side for several laps before Blair finally cleared for the lead and began to pull away. Blair's cushion evaporated on lap nine when Dutch Davies found trouble, bringing out another caution.
The action got heavy on the restart with Blair, Bossard and Dave Hess Jr. briefly battling three-wide for the lead before Blair again scooted away. Soon, John Lobb joined the party making it a four-way battle at the front. With seven laps remaining, it was Blair holding off Bossard, Hess Jr. and Lobb who remained fourth despite heavy contact with a lapped car with 10 circuits remaining. Blair held on for his fifth Overhead Door Super Late Model win of the year with Bossard, Hess Jr., Lobb and Jake Finnerty completing the top five. Davies, Doug Eck and John Volpe won the heat races.
Lunger and Chad Wright made up the front row for the Ed Shults Auto Group RUSH Crate Late Model feature and it was Lunger's #71 leading comfortably by the end of the first trip around the Busti oval. Blair made the early jump to Wright's inside by the end of lap two to find himself in second and Wright continued to fall back moments later as both Wyatt Scott and Bossard worked their ways by for third and fourth.
After a yellow for a Paul Norman spin, Lunger again pulled away on the restart - this time from Blair. Soon after the restart, Lunger found himself ahead of two side-by-side battles as Blair and Wyatt Scott battled for second and Bossard and Jason Genco competed for fourth. Wyatt Scott ultimately emerged with the runner-up spot, passing Blair as flagman Spanky Hall displayed the cross flags to signify halfway.
Lunger was never seriously challenged up front, leading wire-to-wire for his second Ed Shults Auto Group RUSH Crate Late Model win of the season. The second win matches both Blair and Dave Lyon for the season-high in the series. Wyatt Scott ran a strong second, Blair was third, Bossard fourth and Genco rounded out the top five. Lunger and Bossard won the heats.
Michael McGee passed pole sitter Al Brewer for the early edge in the Sugar Grove Beverage Outlaw E-Mod feature. Behind that battle, Gary Eicher, Justin Carlson and Butch Southwell also settled into positions inside the top five. After a Scott Dellahoy spin brought out the first caution of the race, Eicher made a strong move on the restart, bolting into a lead he would never relinquish.
After a caution for a three-car wreck involving Greg Johnson, John Boyd and Kirk Bradley with 10 laps to go, Eicher was able to maintain his lead over McGee, Carlson and Brewer. A little further back in the top 10, Steve Rex, David Scott and Shawn Shingledecker were also making strong progress as was the #4 machine of Cale Crocker.
However, all this was behind Eicher. With the race pushing it's 25-minute time limit, Eicher held off a late charge from McGee to secure his first Sugar Grove Beverage Outlaw E-Mod win of 2017. McGee was second followed by Carlson, Southwell and Brewer. Tim Peterson, Troy Johnson and Greg Johnson were heat race winners.
Chad Carlson and Ryan Scott were up front for the start of the Rusted Nutz RUSH Pro-Mod race with the year's only winner - Dennis Lunger - starting 12th after winning in all seven features held in 2017. While Carlson and Scott were on the front row, it was Matt Harvey who got the great start coming from the second row to the lead in the first one-third mile. While Harvey was fast early, Lunger was taking his usual path to the front passing six cars in the first three laps to move into sixth.
After half of the feature, Harvey continued to pace the field with Scott, Chad Carlson, Jason Covey and Justin Carlson all ahead of Lunger in sixth. Harvey had a mirror full of Chad Carlson with six laps left before Carlson's #18 suddenly slowed and Lunger made a daring three-wide move into second with five laps left. Lunger's chances for a comeback win - and perfect season - ended just after the next restart when his #71 pulled off with apparent left front trouble.
That opened the door for Harvey to complete a wire-to-wire win for his first Rusted Nutz RUSH Pro-Mod feature victory of the season. Ryan Scott was second followed by Justin Carlson, Scott Gurdak and Zach Johnson. Harvey and Lunger were the winners of the two heat races.
It was Scott Dellahoy and Tyler Dynys on the front row for the Wellington Log Homes Street Stocks feature, but it didn't take long for the cream of the 2017 Street Stocks crop to rise to the top. On the second lap of the race, Anthony Marotto bolted by Dellahoy for the top spot and just one lap later, Brandon Groters passed Marotto to become the races' third different leader.
Behind Groters, David Shagla Jr. had moved into second by lap five, setting up a familiar showdown between the two rivals. While those two 2017 winners were fighting over the top spot, John Boardman - winner of the last two features - was creeping his way into the conversation. With 10 laps to go, Boardman passed Shagla for second and began to put the heat on Groters' #22.
Boardman finally cleared Groters for the lead with seven laps left and held on through several late cautions to make it three straight in the Wellington Log Homes Street Stocks division. Groters was second, Shagla finished third, Bill Reeves was fourth and Jordan Eck was fifth. The top three finishers in the feature also each won a heat race.
Tommy Kosinski led the field from start to finish to claim his first win of the season in the Super Sportsmen division. Early in the race, the top four was a family affair with members of the Kosinski family - Tommy, Matt, Ted and Michael respectively - holding positions one through four. Dan Nocero Jr. was the highest running non-Kosinski early on in fifth. Nocero Jr. soon pulled off with trouble handing Jim Kibbe a spot in the top five.
On a restart with five laps to go, Tommy Kosinski began to pull away as Michael Kosinski began to challenge Matt Kosinski for second. That battle allowed Kibbe to close in and Kibbe's #18 was up to second with two laps to go. Kibbe got as close as the rear bumper of Tommy Kosinski over the final lap, but it was Tommy Kosinski's night to win. Kibbe was second followed by Matt Kosinski, Michael Kosinski and Mike Genco. Tommy Kosinski and Matt Kosinski won the heat races.
Dylan Greene jumped from the third starting spot to the lead in the opening lap of the Bailey's Towing & Recovery Super Challengers feature. Greene continued to lead the field through the first two yellows, including one for pole sitter Pat Oyer with just one lap completed. Not long after the next restart, Pete Volpe used a high side move to take the lead away from Greene and Volpe pulled away until a yellow with five laps left.
Under that yellow, Greene's car stalled and was retired from the race giving Andy Proper a clear look at the leader's bumper. Despite that fact, Volpe was able to pull away from Proper and run comfortable laps up front en route to his first Bailey's Towing & Recovery Super Challengers win of the year. Proper held on for second ahead of Greg Rockwell, Chris Horton and Kevin Covell. Volpe, Covell and Rockwell were heat race winners.
Next week will be Christmas in July at the track with the inagural Catherine Donaldson Memorial Outlaw E-Mod Special. Santa Claus and an elf will be at the track from 5:30 to 6:45 p.m. with special stockings and candy for kids ages 2-8. In addition to the 25-lap E-Mod Memorial - a race that will include several lap sponsors and an extra $100 per position for the top ten finishers - all other six divisions of racing will also compete in a full program.
